The School of Radiologic Technology was founded at Central
Maine General Hospital in 1949 by Dr. Clark F. Miller, chief radiologist. It was the first formal educational
program for radiologic technologists in the state of Maine. It began as a one-year program and in
1957 was expanded to a 2-year course to meet the increasing demands of the
field of radiology. The program
included courses and clinical rotations at Central Maine General Hospital.
The school was and still is accredited by the Joint Review
Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. This programmatic accreditation serves to ensure the quality
of the education in radiologic technology.
In 1991 the school affiliated with Central Maine Community
College in Auburn. Students
completed general education courses at the college concurrently with the
radiologic technology courses at the Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) School
of Radiologic Technology. Students
graduated with a certificate of completion from CMMC and an Associate of
Applied Science Degree from Central Maine Community College.
In 1997 the school name was changed to the Clark F. Miller
School of Radiologic Technology of Central Maine Medical Center and was
dedicated in honor of Dr. Clark F. Miller the school’s founder and first
director.
The radiography program was expanded again in 2004 to
accept thirteen students and offer clinical rotations at Central Maine Medical
Center, Central Maine Orthopaedics, Central Maine Imaging Center, Bridgton
Hospital, Franklin Memorial Hospital, and Rumford Hospital. This variety of clinical settings
offered students enhanced clinical education to better prepare them to meet the
challenges of the profession.
In October 2009 the school joined the Central Maine
Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions. The New England Association of Schools
and Colleges approved the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Radiologic
Technology. Students now complete
both general education courses and radiologic technology courses at the CMMC College and graduate
with an Associate of Applied Science Degree.
The Clark F. Miller School of Radiologic Technology has a
long tradition of providing quality education and excellence in the field.
Combined with the College of Nursing and Health Professions, we look forward to
the continued growth of the college as we meet the changing needs of the
healthcare environment.
