Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions welcomes applications from men and women who believe they are qualified to benefit from, and contribute to the educational environment of this School. The commitment of the School is to small classes and close faculty-student relationships. Thus, the Admissions Committee selects those candidates who show evidence of academic ability, intellectual curiosity, motivation and capacity for self-directed growth.

All inquiries by prospective students will be handled by the Registrar. The Registrar will channel requests for information regarding admissions, curriculum, housing, and financial aid to the proper individuals. Persons wishing to attend the Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions need to submit an application and meet all admission requirements. There is Advanced Placement for applicants who qualify: LPN, Paramedic, or a student wishing to transfer from another nursing program. Please contact the Registrar for additional information.

The School follows a selective admissions procedure and begins reviewing applications in January for admission to the Fall Semester. Candidates should submit applications one year prior to the anticipated date of entry.

Application Deadline

Initial admission selections are made by March 15th for the class entering the program during the Fall Semester. February 15th is the application deadline; applications must be completed by March 1st.

 
Admission to the school

Applicants meeting the criteria for admission are accepted regardless of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital or parental status, color, national or ethnic origin and are accorded all the rights, privileges, programs and activities available to students at the School.

I.   ADMISSION CRITERIA*

A completed application accompanied by a fee of $40.00 (non-refundable) must be submitted to the School.

Graduation from high school (official transcript must be mailed by the high school directly to the Registrar’s office); or graduation from a General Educational Development (GED) program (official results must be mailed directly to the Registrar’s office by the institution granting the GED).

Completion of a high school level biology course with a grade of “C” or better or evidence of successful completion of a college level biological science course with a grade of “C” or better.

Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) results:

Required minimum score = 510 Critical Reading/470 Math

The SAT requirement may be waived if the applicant has completed twelve (12) academic college credits of general education courses with a minimum grade of “C” in each course.

Health assessment results from a physical examination performed by the applicant’s personal physician within the past six months.

II.  EARLY DECISION

The Admissions Committee reserves the right to make early decisions and will so notify the applicant.

III. MATRICULATION

Students will not be allowed to register for nursing courses unless the following are received by the Registrar by the date requested:

Immunization record

  • Two MMR’s or titers of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (age exempt if born before January 1, 1957)
  • Hepatitis B series or titer
  • Tetanus – must be within the last 10 years
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) – received immunization, have disease history, or titer
  • Written documentation of negative PPD within past six months 

Evidence of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification: American Heart Association - Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (Course C) or American Red Cross – Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Professional certification.


*An applicant must be able to perform the physical activities inherent in the role of a student in an Associate Degree Nursing Education Program.

Part-time status Part-time enrollment status is available for:

I. Applicants accepted for admission*

Applicants accepted for admission* to the School who desire to enroll in general education courses required by the School's curriculum prior to enrollment in the nursing major. Applicants must submit a request for part-time status in writing to the Registrar.

Applications from candidates requesting part-time status will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee according to its selective admission procedure beginning on January 15th of each year.

A maximum of five (5) part-time students will be accepted each academic year for part-time enrollment.

Applicants accepted for part-time status will be notified in writing beginning March 15th of each year.

Requests for transfer from part-time to full-time status will be prioritized according to the date the written request is received by the Registrar.

A part-time student, to be eligible for financial aid, must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours per semester of courses required by this School's curriculum.

A part-time student must take at least three (3) credit hours per semester.

II. Applicants who are requesting advanced placement

Applicants who have been accepted for advanced placement may request part-time status.

This request must be made in writing to the Chairperson of the Admissions Committee and must be received by August 1st.

A part-time student, to be eligible for financial aid, must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours per semester of courses required by this School's curriculum.

III. Full-time students:

Full-time students must submit their request for a change to part-time status, in writing, to the Associate Director. The written request must include anticipated date for return to full-time status.

A student who meets any of the criteria included in the "Individualized Learning Activities Policy" may need to successfully complete an individualized learning plan prior to return to full-time status.

Return to full-time status will be based on priority of selective re-admission procedure and available space.

Student's academic standing will be maintained during part-time status and continued upon return to full-time status.

A part-time student, to be eligible for financial aid, must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours per semester of courses required by this School's curriculum.

Information Related to Part-Time Status:

A part-time student must provide an official transcript, showing successful completion of any general education course(s) required by this School's curriculum, by June 15 each year. The transcript must be sent directly from the educational institution, from which the course was taken, to the Registrar at Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions. If an official transcript is not received within 30 days after the completion of the course(s) the student will forfeit their part time status. The deadline dates are: January 10th for fall courses and July 1st for spring courses.

A student may be enrolled as a part-time student for a maximum of six (6) continuous academic years prior to applying for full-time status.

A part-time student must notify the School's Admissions Committee of intent to enter the nursing major by September 15, one year in advance of desired admission. Failure to so notify the Committee will forfeit the student's opportunity to enroll in the nursing major in the next academic year.

A minimum of four (4) slots will be available at the beginning of each academic year to enter the nursing major.

A part-time student will be charged the fees in effect at the time the course/service is offered.

A part-time student will be billed and must remit a $25.00 registration fee at the beginning of each semester, and complete required forms by the dates specified by the School. Enrollment will be forfeited if fees and required forms are not received by the dates specified.

Each part-time student will be assigned an academic advisor.

Part-time students are afforded the same privileges and rights as all other students at the School.

Students must follow the curriculum plan in effect for the class they enter.

Some general education courses required by the School's curriculum may be challenged. See Challenge Exams for General Education Courses policy.

Any student (full-time or part-time status) who knowingly falsifies any application, health record information, transcripts, or test scores, or who fails to indicate all previously attended institutions, is subject to rejection or dismissal.

It is the responsibility of all students, requesting to transfer credits to this School from other regionally accredited post-secondary educational institutions, to provide catalog descriptions of all courses offered for transfer. These descriptions must be mailed directly to the Registrar from the post-secondary educational institution attended.

Leave of Absence

Students wishing to take a leave of absence must contact their Academic Advisor and the Associate Director. A request for a leave of absence must be submitted, in writing, to the Registrar, or if desired, to the Director of the School.

A leave of absence may be granted for up to one calendar year by the Director of the School. The student will be notified of the decision in writing, within five (5) working days.

The School's refund policy will apply to students who are granted a leave of absence. For reinstatement, the student must file a written request with the Registrar three (3) months prior to the first day of class for the semester involved. Return to the School will be based on priority of selective readmission procedure and available space. Students will be reinstated on a space available basis. If space is unavailable, the leave of absence will be extended. A student who does not request reinstatement by this deadline will be automatically withdrawn from the School by the Registrar, and will be sent a written notice of automatic withdrawal.

Withdrawal

Students wishing to withdraw from the School must contact their Academic Advisor and Associate Director, and submit a letter of resignation to the Registrar. Withdrawal is not considered official until the dated letter of resignation is filed with the Registrar. Until such filing, the student remains enrolled in the School, and is responsible for fulfilling its academic and financial requirements.

Readmitted Students

Students who previously attended the Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions, and who withdrew for one or more semesters, are eligible to apply for re-admission by submitting an application to the Registrar.

Persons who were suspended or dismissed from the School for academic or disciplinary reasons, will be reviewed by the Associate Director. Recommendations will then be submitted to the Director of the School.

Auditing

Persons wishing to attend credit courses, but not to earn credit for such courses, may enroll as auditors. Auditors are not counted as students in the enrollment census, do not have the course recorded on a transcript, and are not required to complete the assignments or take examinations. Tuition charges for audited courses are the same as for courses taken for credit.

Students entering at other than the beginning of the semester to audit a course will be charged the regular fee on a prorated schedule:

a) 2 to 4 classes - regular tuition charge
b) 5 to 8 classes - regular tuition charge
c) 9 to 12 classes - regular tuition charge
d) 13 to 16 classes full tuition charge

Students wishing to audit the clinical/campus laboratory experience may do so with permission of the Associate Director or designee.
